It’s Your Body…Not Your Doctor’s
One of the biggest problems that people with Fibromyalgia face is that their doctor’s try to convince them that they know “what’s best for them”. While doctor’s have their place in society, Fibromyalgia is not a cureable disease, and as such, you cannot expect doctor’s, who are in their field to “cure people” to know what to do about your Fibromyalgia. You may be going to a doctor who does not even believe that Fibromyalgia exists. You may be going to a doctor who wants to cure you, and does everything in their power to cure you, becoming more and more frustrated when they realize that they can’t cure you. Or, you may have given up on doctor’s all together. Regardless of what your situation is, it is important to remember that your body belongs to you and not your doctor.
Steroids, anti depressants, narcotics…these are just a few of the prescription drugs that doctor’s prescribe for patients living with Fibromyalgia. The problem with all of these prescription medications is that they are intended for short term use…not lifetime use. Fibromyalgia is a lifetime disease, and you do not want a short time fix to a lifetime problem that will cause you more suffering down the road. Sure, I was fooled at first as well. Steroids made my body feel great when I first took them, but when they wore off, boy did I feel miserable!
Narcotics were wonderful for numbing the pain, but they numbed other things as well, like my ability to function properly. Anti-depressants made me happy living with Fibromyalgia, but you know what, I still had Fibromyalgia. None of these prescription medications could be used over a long period of time, and none of them were safe to use. I didn’t want prescription Lyrica as the “answer”. I didn’t want to take prescription pills that I could not afford for the rest of my lifetime that had side effects like weight gain and increasing my acid reflux. I wanted something safe and effective, and that’s when I started doing research on natural treatments for Fibromyalgia.
I scoured the Internet in search of treatment options. I found things about foods to avoid, ingredients to avoid, and over the counter medications that are all natural that could help relieve the symptoms of Fibromyalgia. It took me over a year to gather all of the information that I have in my Fibromyalgia database, a binder I keep that is filled with tips and tricks that I want to remember about dealing with Fibromyalgia. It is my hope, that little by little, I can incorporate the information in my Fibromyalgia database, including sources, here in my blog, so that you, or someone you know who is suffering from Fibromyalgia has an easy “one stop shop” filled with resources on how to manage their Fibromyalgia symptoms.
At this time, I would like to reiterate that I am not a doctor, and that you should always talk to your doctor before starting a new treatment for Fibromyalgia or stopping an old one.
The bottom line however is that when you are on prescription medications, listen to your body. Your body will tell you if you are tired, in pain, worn out, have clouded judgement, or whatever other symptoms that it may be suffering from. Listen to your body…it can tell you when something is wrong, and if your body says that something is wrong, don’t live with the suffering, talk to your doctor, get off the prescription medication, and look for alternative treatments.
Hugs to all!
